The Gladiators of Patras

The Archaeological Museum of Patras (Southern Greece) houses a remarkable collection of gladiator tombstones, offering valuable insights into the names, armour, and ranks of the fighters who once battled in the arena.

Roman Patras was founded as a Roman colony by Augustus in 16–15 BC after the Battle of Actium, becoming one of the most important cities in Roman Greece. Thanks to its strategic location and thriving port, it prospered as a major center of trade, administration, and entertainment, with monuments such as an odeon, aqueduct, amphitheatre, and facilities for gladiatorial games.
