In July 997, one of the most decisive—yet largely forgotten—battles of the medieval Balkans took place.

At the Battle of the Spercheios River, the Byzantine army under Nikephoros Ouranos, the trusted general of Emperor Basil II, dealt a crushing defeat to the forces of Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria. The victory ended Samuel’s devastating raids into southern Greece and marked a major turning point in the long Byzantine–Bulgarian Wars.
