Byzantine tales in the International Congress of Vienna

We’re always grateful to see our work appreciated by readers, fellow comics creators, and history enthusiasts. But we can’t help feeling a little extra proud when we see part of our work featured in an article in a publication released for this year’s International Congress of Byzantine Studies in Vienna.

For those who may not be familiar with it, the International Congress of Byzantine Studies is the largest international academic gathering devoted to Byzantium. First held in 1924, it takes place roughly every five years, bringing together Byzantinists, historians, archaeologists, philologists, and researchers from all over the world.

This year, it is being held in Vienna from 24 to 29 August, under the very fitting title Byzantium Beyond Byzantium.

When we first started creating comics about Byzantium, what we wanted to do was fairly simple: tell these stories in a different way and bring them closer to people who might never otherwise encounter them through an academic book. But we have always tried to do so with respect for historical research and for the people who dedicate themselves to it.

That’s why it means something special to us to see a small part of that effort now appearing in a publication connected with the most important international gathering in the field of Byzantine studies.

It’s one of those small moments that makes us genuinely happy about how far we’ve come.
